Modern wood burning stoves can look fantastic in new build properties, bringing warmth and character to interiors that can sometimes lack a natural focal point.
The good news is that it is possible to install a wood burning stove in many new build homes, even if the property doesn't have a traditional chimney. There are, however, several important things to consider before deciding whether a stove is suitable for your home.
Can You Install a Wood Burning Stove in a New Build?
Yes, in many cases a wood burning stove can be installed in a new build property. The installation will need to comply with current Building Regulations, and factors including ventilation, the flue system, stove location and heat output will all need to be considered.
New build homes are also generally much better insulated and more airtight than older properties. This makes choosing the correct stove particularly important, as an appliance that is too powerful could quickly make a modern living room uncomfortably warm.
What If My New Build Doesn't Have a Chimney?
This is one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding wood burning stoves. You don't necessarily need a traditional brick chimney to have a stove installed.
Where there is no suitable chimney, it may be possible to install a twin-wall insulated flue system. These systems provide a safe route for combustion gases to leave the property and can often be installed internally through the building or externally along an outside wall, depending on the property and proposed stove location.
What Is a Twin-Wall Flue?
A twin-wall flue is a specially designed insulated chimney system commonly used where a property doesn't have an existing masonry chimney. It consists of an inner flue surrounded by insulation and an outer casing, helping the flue maintain the temperatures required to operate safely and effectively.
Twin-wall systems also give homeowners considerably more freedom when deciding where to position a stove. This can make them particularly useful for new builds, extensions and properties where the original design didn't include a fireplace or chimney.
Do New Build Homes Need Additional Ventilation?
Modern new build homes are designed to minimise draughts and retain heat, which is excellent for energy efficiency but means ventilation needs to be carefully considered when installing a stove.
A wood burning stove requires an adequate supply of air for combustion. Depending on the stove and property, additional ventilation or a direct external air supply may therefore be required as part of the installation.
What Type of Stove Is Best for a New Build?
Modern Ecodesign wood burning stoves are particularly well suited to contemporary homes. They are designed to burn wood efficiently while producing significantly lower emissions than much older generations of stoves.
There is also an enormous choice of designs available. A freestanding contemporary stove can create a striking feature in a minimalist living room, while more traditional designs can introduce warmth and character into a modern property.
Don't Automatically Choose a Bigger Stove
One of the most important considerations when installing a wood burning stove in a new build is heat output. Bigger isn't necessarily better, particularly in a modern property with high levels of insulation.
A stove that produces too much heat can make the room uncomfortable and may encourage you to operate the appliance inefficiently. Room dimensions, insulation, glazing and the overall layout of the property should all be considered when choosing the appropriate kW output.
Can a Stove Create Character in a New Build?
Absolutely. In fact, this is one of the reasons we see homeowners considering wood burning stoves for newer properties.
New build interiors often provide a relatively blank canvas, allowing you to create a feature around the stove rather than working around an existing fireplace. A carefully chosen hearth, feature wall or freestanding stove can completely change the appearance of a living space and provide a natural focal point for the room.
Do I Need Planning Permission for a Wood Burning Stove?
A standard stove and flue installation will not always require planning permission, but this depends on the property and the proposed installation. Building Regulations still apply, and there can also be additional considerations for certain properties and locations.
This is why it is important to have the proposed installation assessed properly rather than buying a stove based purely on appearance. The flue route, ventilation requirements, clearances and suitability of the chosen location all need to be considered.

We chose Mansfield fireplace and stove centre because we needed a fairly quick turnaround due to carpets being already booked in and they certainly delivered, the installation was caried about by Ross and Jake(father and son team) and they didn’t disappoint nothing was too much trouble. Electrics by Eddie were installed just as requested and finally plastering by Ryan who spent all day none stop on his own which gave our new media wall a perfect finish. Overall the team from Mansfield fireplace and stove centre are very professional and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone wanting that perfect look in there home!

Amazing just wow !! We visited Mansfield Fireplaces looking for a media wall. We decided on The Mayfair and from the very beginning, the experience was excellent. The staff were welcoming, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful in guiding us through the options without any pressure. We were informed that our fitter, Gaz, would come out to measure up, and from that point on, nothing was too much trouble. He took the time to walk us through every detail of the design, including handles, drawers, shelving, and socket placement, ensuring everything was tailored exactly to our preferences. The installation took place over three days, with Gaz leading a team of three, including Kyle the electrician. Throughout the process, they were professional, courteous, and respectful of our home, always cleaning up thoroughly at the end of each day. Once the installation was complete, Ben the painter came in and truly transformed the media wall, bringing everything together beautifully. We were away on holiday for a few days, and when we returned, Gaz came back to add the mirrored backing to the shelves — the perfect finishing touch that gave the whole piece a real “wow factor.” We couldn’t be happier with the end result and are incredibly grateful to the entire team — Gaz, Kyle, and Ben — for their hard work and attention to detail. Absolutely delighted with the work carried out on our fireplace. We had the back of the fire recess re-bricked, and the finish looks fantastic — it’s completely transformed the look of the stove and feels much more solid and professionally done. Josh and Austin were brilliant from start to finish: polite, friendly, and clearly knew exactly what they were doing. They worked solidly all day without any fuss, kept everything tidy as they went, and made sure the area was properly cleaned up before leaving. The attention to detail really shows in the final result, and you can tell they take pride in their workmanship. Would happily recommend them to anyone needing fireplace or stove work — a superb job all round.

Had our lovely Contura fitted a few days after the snow in Jan by Oli and Martin lovely lads , did a beautiful job the plasterer Marvyn came the day after and again superb job 👏 couldn't even tell he'd been in the Room it was so Clean!!! A bit more communication from the showroom to the fitters would help! Other than that it's a clean 5 Stars from us , I would Highly recommend Mansfield Fireplaces & Stove ...if you think you can get quality and the work done cheaper...then good luck...worth every penny , its not just a log Burner its a beautiful Feature 😍😍😍

We recently had a fire fitted by Mansfield Fireplaces, and it’s great! The process was very easy, we visited the showroom, chose the fire we’d like, and the team were great in answering any questions. The team arrived on time, tidied up after themselves and left the house ready for us to enjoy. The fire has transformed our dining room and we are so pleased we found Mansfield Fireplaces! Such a great decision we made. Would recommend!

From our initial inquiry at The Mansfield Media Wall showroom to completion of our new media wall. The whole transaction has been extremely smooth. The guys in the showroom were helpful and answered all the questions we had. Communication with the company was excellent keeping us informed of dates and when different guys were due to visit. Ross the installer worked tirelessly for four days non stop! He did an extremely professional job, checking with us along the way making sure we were happy with the details of the installation. He was very neat and tidy causing little mess. Lewis the electrician followed Ross, again he was brilliant, accommodating our needs with regard to the electrics and again no mess and very professional Finally, Ryan the plasterer/ finishing Installer did an excellent job, again checking with us asking on specifics of exactly how we wanted the finished installation to look. Once again there was no mess We absolutely love our new Media Wall and would have no qualms in recommending Mansfield Media Wall 10/10 *
