Meet Matt Sherwood – Showroom Manager at Mansfield Fireplaces at Ponsford

When you walk into the Mansfield Fireplaces showroom at Ponsford in Sheffield, chances are you will be greeted by Matt Sherwood. Friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely interested in what you want to create in your home.

Matt joined the business as Showroom Manager following the launch of our new Ponsford showroom. Bringing with him a fresh perspective, a strong customer focus, and a real passion for fires, fireplaces, stoves, and media walls.

Originally from Colorado in the USA, Matt moved to the UK five years ago and now calls Sheffield home.

From Colorado to Sheffield

Matt moved to the UK so his wife could be closer to home. Before joining Mansfield Fireplaces, he worked in furniture sales and spent years as a professional ghostwriter. After relocating to Sheffield, he managed several running stores across the city, which is why many Ponsford customers already recognise him from the local running community.

Matt did not set out to work in the fireplace industry. The decision came after visiting the Mansfield Fireplace and Stove Centre showroom as a customer.

What stood out straight away was the standard of work, the quality of the products, and the welcoming atmosphere. When the opportunity arose to manage the new Sheffield showroom, it felt like the right fit.

A real connection to fires and stoves

Although Matt did not work in the fireplace industry in the US, fires have always been part of his life.

Growing up in rural Pennsylvania, his family home was heated by a wood burning stove. Later, in Colorado, some of his favourite memories were sitting by the fire with his wife while snow fell outside.

That emotional connection matters. It is something Matt sees every day when helping customers choose fireplaces, stoves, and media wall fires for their own homes.

Like many Sheffield homeowners, Matt and his wife live in a new build property where a log burning stove was not practical. They went through the same process many customers face, finding a realistic and convenient alternative that still delivers warmth and atmosphere.

That experience helps Matt guide customers honestly and realistically.

It is beautifully designed, compact, and sits within a store that people across Sheffield and South Yorkshire already know and trust. The Ponsford team have been incredibly welcoming, creating a relaxed environment that makes browsing and asking questions easy.

The space is large enough to inspire ideas without feeling overwhelming. Customers can clearly see media wall concepts, fireplaces, and stoves, while still enjoying a one to one conversation. And yes, the parking helps too.

Matt’s approach is simple - He listens.

Every conversation starts with questions. How you live. What matters to you. The style of your home. How you want the space to feel.

Only once that is clear does the conversation move onto products. Matt makes notes, repeats things back, and ensures customers leave with clarity rather than confusion.

He will never recommend something he would not have in his own home. And he will never sell a fireplace, stove, or media wall that he does not believe a customer will genuinely love.

That is how confidence is built.

Favourite fires, stoves, and styles

Matt is a big fan of Charnwood log burning stoves. The flame picture, the warmth, and the environmental performance make them hard to beat.

That said, they are not right for every home.

For customers looking for convenience without losing atmosphere, Matt often recommends New Forest electric fires. They deliver a realistic flame effect and work perfectly within modern media walls.

Style always comes down to context.

Some homes suit clean, ultra modern media walls. Others call for a traditional marble surround or a classic fireplace that looks at home in a Victorian property.

There is no single best option. The right choice depends on the space and the person living in it.

What Sheffield and South Yorkshire customers can expect

When customers visit the Ponsford showroom, Matt wants them to feel like they have been properly looked after.

No pressure. No rush. Just honest advice and time to ask questions.

The aim is for every customer to leave feeling informed, confident, and comfortable with their decision. Like they have spoken to someone who genuinely has their best interests at heart.

Almost everything in the showroom is British made. Installations are carried out by Mansfield Fireplaces’ own in-house team. Customers are never passed from company to company. The process begins and ends with the same people.

Life in Sheffield outside the showroom

Learning to drive on the wrong side of the road was a challenge, especially when it came to roundabouts.

Beyond that, Matt loves Sheffield. The people are warm, the culture is down to earth, and the city feels welcoming. British food has been a pleasant surprise, and after years of constant sunshine in Colorado, even the rain has its charm.

Outside of work, Matt enjoys time with his wife and stepson. He also likes to go running in the Peak District, and trying to keep up with a very energetic Bengal cat.

It is safe to say he feels at home.

Looking ahead, what excites you most about the future of Mansfield Fireplaces?

There are many things I am excited about for the future of Mansfield Fireplace & stove centre. The new extension of our already well-established Mansfield showroom in Ponsford is going to allow us to grow our client base further into the northern parts of the UK such as Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster. 

The implementation of new systems will ensure we can streamline our services which will in turn increase the efficiency when dealing with new enquiries and providing services to our ever-growing customer base. 

I am most excited about how much more we can grow and the many opportunities we are currently exploring to offer our varying types of customers, from architects and interior design services to retail and trade customers. The possibilities are endless.
