I meet Sheffield homeowners who are trying to decide between gas and electric fireplaces almost every day. Often, it’s because they have an existing gas fire in place and are thinking of updating or replacing it.
There isn’t really a “right” or “better” choice when it comes to gas vs. electric, but each option has its own advantages and disadvantages. In today’s short post, I want to highlight some of those details in the hopes that they’ll help you to make a good decision for yourself.
Let’s look at what you get with a gas fireplace, along with the reasons you might decide to make a switch.

Gas Fires Give Real Flame
and More Heat
While they don’t offer the same glow and warmth that a wood-burning stove would, gas fires still feature real flames that give off consistent heat. In that way, they can sometimes offer the best of everything. You can turn them on and off when you want, heat your living room quickly, and enjoy the sight of a real flame all at the same time.
It’s also true that many of our customers who have gas fireplaces already in place have gotten used to them. They may be more comfortable moving from one gas fire to another.

Electric Fireplaces are
More Flexible
While a gas fireplace gives you more heating output, the caveat is that you can’t run a gas fire without increasing the temperature in your room. Electrics can run with or without the heater on. In fact, one of the most common reasons customers tell me they are switching to an electric fireplace is to have the ability to enjoy the aesthetic of a warm flame without actually producing heat.
But what about that aesthetic? Is there a noticeable difference between gas and electric fireplaces?
Although electric fireplaces don’t feature real flames, modern technology had made them appear more lifelike than you might imagine. In fact, we have some current models in our Mansfield and Ponsford Sheffield showrooms that are often mistaken for gas fires.
Another advantage of an electric fireplace is that you can change the appearance of your flame simply by clicking the remote. So, if you want a different look or feel you can just switch things up instantly.
And finally, it’s important to remember that electric fireplaces don’t burn natural gas. That can mean fewer maintenance and safety concerns, especially when it comes to fuel lines and hot surfaces.
The Best Way to Choose Between
