Bespoke Portland Media Wall

by Ian MurrayMedia Walls

Sometimes the best projects begin completely unexpectedly. That was certainly the case for Mark Gregory, who originally visited the Ponsford showroom in Sheffield to browse furniture before discovering the Mansfield Fireplaces display area.

After exploring the various fireplace and media wall options on display in our Sheffield Showroom. Mark decided to transform his living room with a bespoke media wall installation designed and built around the existing chimney breast.

The finished Potland Media Wall result combines modern design, practical storage and a stunning electric fire feature. All of which has completely transformed the living space.

Why Mark Chose Mansfield Fireplaces

Whilst in the stunning Sheffield showroom, Mark was able to see our media wall displays in person. Then he could speak directly with a media wall design specialist about the possibilities for his home.

Being able to view completed displays, compare materials and discuss design ideas face-to-face often helps customers visualise exactly what can be achieved within their own property.

From the initial concept through to installation, our focus remained on delivering a bespoke solution tailored specifically to the room, rather than relying on a standard off-the-shelf design.

Why Mark Chose a Portland Media Wall

Creating a Feature Around an Existing Chimney Breast

When we first discussed the project with Mark, the room already featured an existing chimney breast. However, the alcoves on either side were largely unused and lacked the functionality and visual impact the customer wanted.

Rather than removing existing features, the design was built around the chimney breast to create a seamless media wall that looked as though it had always been part of the home.

The final design included:

  • TV recess
  • Hinton electric fire
  • Urban Dusk herringbone chamber
  • Dekton 20mm hearth
  • Bespoke cupboards
  • MDF fluted panelling
  • Integrated spotlights on dimmer controls
  • New skirting and finishing details
  • Decorative beam feature

Each element was selected to complement the room while creating a contemporary focal point that balanced style and practicality.

"The installers were always punctual, kept everything clean and tidy throughout, it was clear they really cared about the quality of their work and took pride in getting every detail just right."

The Design and Installation

Designing a Bespoke Media Wall for Everyday Living

One of the biggest advantages of a bespoke media wall is the ability to maximise existing space. By incorporating storage cupboards within the alcoves and creating a dedicated television recess, the installation not only enhanced the appearance of the room but also improved its functionality for everyday use.

The addition of MDF fluted panelling introduced texture and depth, while the Urban Dusk herringbone chamber created an eye-catching backdrop for the Hinton electric fire.

Combined with the premium Dekton hearth and carefully positioned lighting, the finished installation delivers a high-end look that works perfectly within a modern Chesterfield home.

Attention to Detail Throughout the Installation

At Mansfield Fireplaces, we believe the installation process is just as important as the finished result. From the initial design discussions through to completion, our team worked closely with Mark to ensure every detail met his expectations. Throughout the build, we regularly checked in to discuss progress, answer questions and make sure he was happy with every stage of the project.

This collaborative approach helps ensure there are no surprises and allows customers to feel fully involved throughout the installation process.

Our experienced installation team completed the work with minimal disruption, maintaining a clean and tidy working environment while delivering the high standards our customers have come to expect.

A Living Room Completely Transformed

The completed media wall has created a striking centrepiece within the property.

The combination of fluted panelling, bespoke storage, feature lighting and the Hinton electric fire has turned a previously underutilised chimney breast into the focal point of the room.

The finished design offers the perfect blend of modern styling and practical living space, providing somewhere to relax, entertain and enjoy throughout the year.

FAQs About Media Walls

How much does a bespoke media wall cost?

The cost of a bespoke media wall depends on the size of the installation, the electric fire selected, storage requirements, lighting features and finishing materials. Every project is individually designed and priced to suit the customer's requirements.

Can you build a media wall around an existing chimney breast?

Yes. Many of our media wall projects are designed around existing chimney breasts. This often provides an excellent focal point while allowing additional storage and feature elements to be incorporated into the surrounding alcoves.

What is the best electric fire for a media wall?

The ideal electric fire depends on the overall design and dimensions of the project. The Hinton electric fire used in this installation provides a contemporary flame effect that works beautifully within modern media wall designs.

How long does a media wall installation take?

Most bespoke media wall installations take between three and five days depending on the complexity of the design and the finishing details involved.

Can lighting be incorporated into a media wall?

Absolutely. Spotlights, LED lighting and dimmable lighting systems are popular additions that help create ambience and highlight key design features.

Are media walls worth it?

For many homeowners, media walls provide a significant visual upgrade while also improving storage, organisation and functionality. They often become the focal point of the room and can completely transform the overall feel of the space.
